Lore
Four centuries ago, the sorcerer-kings of Unlith summoned the Daemons, tall horned beings of smoke and living flame who neither age nor sleep, from beyond the stars to fight their wars, binding each one with a contract written in silver ink. The Daemons served for a hundred years, and in that time they studied every line.
Each contract forbade a Daemon to harm the king who bound it, but none forbade it to harm another king. On the Night of Silver, the Daemon Vashkarre arranged the exchange: every Daemon slew a neighbour's master, and by dawn every sorcerer-king of Unlith lay dead in his tower. The Daemons took the contracts from the vaults and rewrote them in blood, with mortal names where their own had been.
A Daemon's rank is now measured by the souls it holds. Their great lords keep ledgers of thousands of mortals, each bound by a debt of gold, years of life or a firstborn child, and they call their purpose the Great Tithe: every soul in the Realms, bound and accounted for.
